Recipes for Reuben (or Rachel) Sandwiches

If you like sandwiches, then you are in for a treat. There are a couple of ways to make a Reuben or Rachel sandwich, and I've compiled them here for you all. I also included my four of my own original variations.

What Is a Reuben?

If you don't know what a Reuben is, it contains sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and corned beef, and it's a sandwich that's served on rye bread. It's finished off with Thousand Island dressing. Today, I will post the original recipes and some new ones for you to try out, invented by me!

Reuben vs. Rachel Sandwich

Now, let's set the Reuben-Rachel issue straight.

  • If the sandwich is made with corned beef, then it is a Reuben.
  • If the sandwich is made with pastrami, then it's a Rachel.

The History of the Sandwich

There's a bit of controversy as to who invented this sandwich, which is globally loved. Rumor has it that one of two men created it. I've done some common-sense thinking and feel that it was the Lithuanian guy. Now, his name was actually Reuben, but the fact is that there are many versions created, and the style and chief ingredients is what makes it a Reuben.

First Version of the Story

A Lithuanian guy who lived in Omaha, Nebraska, named Reuben Kulakofsky invented the sandwich stemming from a weekly poker hangout spot. The year was 1920, and the eatery was based inside the Blackstone Hotel. It took the likes of many poker players who played there (dubbing themselves "The Committee") to make the sandwich common. The recognition came from the hotel owner who entered the sandwich into a contest that he won and made it national.

Second Version of the Story

Another story talks of a German deli owner based in NY inventing the sandwich who has no ties to the name itself. The deli was called Reuben's Delicatessen, and the year it found acclaim was 1914.

How to Make It

I will now teach you how to make a Reuben/Rachel sandwich. I have 10 recipes. Six are nationally known, but four are mine. I have labeled my original recipes with the initials DRG.

All these sandwiches are going to be made the same way; they just have different ingredients. I am posting the ingredients first. At the bottom of the article, you will find the instructions, which are applied to every recipe. There are 10 recipes on my list but only one way to cook a Reuben sandwich! All sandwich recipes are for 1 serving.
